Problem with Redhat 9 installation -- keyboard

I am installing a redhat 9 on my compaq Presario 5106CL with no luck.
Somehow the keyboard was never recognized after the boot. I have to use the keyboard to type password during installation process.

Please help.

You haven't explained how you installed you machine.
Did you install Redhat Linux while you connected the p/s 2, u.s.b or serial keyboard to your laptop? Of course this will course such errors the same applies to installing Redhat linux on your laptop using p/s 2 or u.s.b mouse.
So please inform us how you did this before we can give some help

What do you mean by "the keyboard was never recognized after the boot" ?1st advice:during the boot process, set the interactive mode, and disable the services that are likely to cause problems (gdm for instance). When you can log in, check the /var/log/messages.

The keyboard is a compaq brand, it uses a u.s.b connection. The computer is a desktop.

When the computer started, I noticed that the keyboard activity-LED
light was flashing. But after I select to boot using graphical mode (by hitting the return key) or using the text mode (by typing "text", yes, the keyboard worked upto this point), then the activity light went off and no matter what do you type on the keyboard, there is nothing showed on the screen.

I do need the keyboard during installation (even for the graphical mode), as there is a step asking you to select a root password. I get stuck in this step.
