Problem with openGL

Hello forum!
I've just installed centOS on my computer and I'm trying to run a program that requires GL visualisation...
I think there's a problem with my graphics installation, cause when I run the program all turns black and I end up at the log in screen (like when you type ctrl-alt-backspace). Anyway, I tried glxgears with these results:

....
unknown chip id 0x7145, can't guess.
libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs.
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
...

and glxinfo gives

....
name of display: :0.0
unknown chip id 0x7145, can't guess.
libGL warning: 3D driver returned no fbconfigs.
libGL error: InitDriver failed
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No

Is my graphics card (radeon x1400) installed properly with all drivers? I'm really new to linux, so I don't really know how to do all this... I have a lenovo dual core laptop. Is my GL ok or do I need to change something? sorry for the long post, and thanks in advance for any help!
/Ida

search LQ Blogs and tutorial/howto. In particular iro has a tute @LQ.
(I use nVidia, and the process is different, sorry)

Hi, how did you go? any progress?

You may require direct rendering to get that program to run.

It may be as simple as adding this to the config....

But as I mentioned above, fglrx/radeon/ati/amd may be different in it's setup.

iro's blog is here....
http://www.linuxquestions.org/blog/ironumber1-320611/

You just need to check the commands to refer to your distro.

But, otherwise It is still GNU/Linux, and setup will be similar.

cheers, Glenn

Hello!
Actually, the problem was solved just the other day! I got a linux-guy to come and help me... =) I installed the ATI drivers (from their homepage) for my graphics card. Anyway, it didn't work despite this cause somehow the graphics gdm kicked in when trying to switch over or something like that... My "helper" killed the x-server (ctrl+alt+backspace) and then killed the gdm graphics or something like that (I'm really not sure what happened). After rebooting the fglrx was ok! the xorg.conf was updated and no problems running glxgears. It was neccessary to kill the graphics process like that, just rebooting normally didn't cut it...
thanks anyway!
Ida

OK, well done,

that may have been a problem with X, logging-off is the only way to save the settings, restarting the computer shuts down too quickly and the x setting are not saved.

All's well.
