problem with MAKE

I am trying to understand the functionality of MAKE in Linux. So, I have these main.c, reciprocal.cpp, reciprocal.hpp.
When I compiled them individually and linked them, they all are working fine and giving the desired results.
Now I removed the object files and issued the command "% make" and it says:
bash: fg: %: no such job

Also, I was trying to find documentation by issuing the command "info make" and it lists me several topics / nodes. What do I type to get the info about specific node?
