Trust me, this is not a stupid question!
It sounds like your CD may be corrupted. Did you do a md5sum check after you downloaded it? Right click on the ISO and select "md5su" and then compare that with the sum supplied at the download site.
Second thought would be to determine that you have the CD in the CD reader. Some computers (mine) can't load some Live CD's from the DVD drive.
