Problem With Grub, wrong partition.

Grub thinks that my windows install is on Partition 1, its on Partition 0. It will not allow me to change it. Is there anyway I can log in as root, and edit the menu.lst file manually? This is really bugging me.

look for grub.conf it should be in /boot/grub/ and make your changes there.

I'm slightly confused by your question, as you don't need to do anything special to edit menu.lst

simply login as root, and edit /boot/grub/menu.lst with whatever text editor you want.

I don't know how to login as root. I can goto the console and:

Use the SU command
chown and change the owner to me. This allows me to change the atributes, but when I try to save iit cannot save.

You think you are confused? Try being me :newbie:

Useing Mandrake 10 by the way.

So your suing to root, with the root password, but can't save the file?

You can also login as root, just use root as your user name and your root password.

It doesn't give me an option when I log in, just an image with my user name. Does it matter that I can only run in failsafe mode?

just go into the console, type "su" then your root pass
then open the grub.conf in an editor

wait, what error do you get?

Reinstalled XP and Mandrake. Works fine now. I had a few problems with it hanging at 28% when loading KDE though.
