problem with graphical mode in slackware 10.1
 
Hello all,
i had XP and redhat 9 on my machine....
now i was trying to install slackware10.1 too on this machine.......i.e more that 1 distro of linux on the same machine......
Has installed the lilo of slackware on MBR.so right now i don't have access to redhat
........
the problem is with the graphics of slackware.
..........
by default init is '3'
so from the console when i'm going to the graphical mode through "startx"
....the graphics are not working normally....
i mean......i can just see the images but no text......
i.e if i'm right clicking the mouse, i can see that box and the various pictures but can't see the text.......same is happening if i'm opening 'terminal' or home etc..
....
intially i forgot to install the "tcl" and "xap" packages ........but now i've installed them ...
any sort of help will be appreciated..

please post the packages you have installed to see if there's anything obvious missing:

on a side note, this kinda thing is usually avoided by doing a "full install" after selecting the series you want...

i'm looking at your package list and mine with a diff viewer but i haven't found any culprit yet... :(

what window manager are you using?? does the problem occur on all window managers?? you can choose the window manager by doing a "xwmconfig" before the "startx"...

A couple things I'd do since you installed portions separately:

First, edit /etc/ld.so.conf and verify it has the line:

/usr/X11R6/lib
If not, add it and run /sbin/ldconfig

Next run:

xlsfonts | less
That should generate a list of fonts known to X. If you get a list of fonts, try running:

xfontsel
I believe you just left click on the fndry button and you should be able to select from a list.

then switched over to some "blackbox" window manager....it hanged there too.
......
then faced a new problem of having duplicate or bad blocks in the root i.e hda7
..checked it using ....

e2fsck -v -y /dev/hda7
being my file system is ext2
....
then i went with the suggestions given by "n0xvp"

/usr/X11R6/lib
it was there in /etc/ld.so.conf
....
then i moved ahead with the instructions given by "n0xvp"
but when i typed

xlsfonts | less
there it gave a message that "unable to open 'display'
and after that

xfontsel
too gave an error "can't open display"....

what should i do now......
a guy asked me about the details of /etc/xorg.conf file........but this file is not there.

Sorry, I should have told you to run startx first and then open an xterm window before running xlsfonts | less and xfontsel.

Your xorg.conf may be in /etc/X11, the above two commands will verify your system is seeing the fonts and then give you the ability to select available fonts.

pardon me, i don't know what does this "xterm window" means.
Are you talking about the terminal/console.......if you are then let me reiterate
that i even can't see anything related with text in terminal/cosole.

since init=3.....so i'm logging on to terminal after bootup.....
from there on executing "startx".....getting onto the graphical mode...
the icons on the desktop are a bit blurred and can't see any texts there.....neither on
right clicking the mouse or inside "home" nor in the option menu at the left bottom corner

check the horizontal and vertical refresh rates for ur monitor as u ahv specified in ur xorg.conf

Great !!!

after uncommenting the code specified ( which is a part of xorg.conf ) the problem has been
solved partially......b'coz now graphics is quite fine...can see the text also....
but its generating some errors when i'm shutting down the system.
i'm checking for the errors....

"masand" will you please explain a bit what all this was.....i.e why we uncommented all that
and how it solved the problem etc. etc..

it is quite simple!

ur system is not capable of handling those modules

there is nothing to worry though
