Problem with Firefox installation

I downloaded Firefox under my regular user account to my home directory. I then su into root from a console and copied the tar.gz file to /. I extracted it to get the firefox-installer directory but when I try to run ./firefox-installer from that directory I get the following error message.

Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

(firefox-installer-bin:7719): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

Can someone tell me what this means and what I have to do to go about fixing it?

As normal user, do xhost +localhost
As root (in the firefox directory):
DISPLAY=:0.0 ./firefox-installer
