problem with files on desktop

Hi everyone,

I'm running Debian 5.0.7 + GNOME 2.22.2, and since some days I'm having a strange problem.
If I want to move the icon of a file from one point to another of the desktop, a simple dragging will cause the creation of a copy of it. The combination shift+dragging of the file will effectively move the icon as it was happening with simple dragging before the appearance of this strange behavior. This works only with data files and links to folders and is not affecting "Computer" and mounted volumes icons.

Does someone has a clue of what is happened

thanks
cheers
Mattia

Are you sure that you're not right-clicking on icon?
You have to click & hold left -button if that's the way your mouse is setup.
Also check mouse properties under "System>Preferences>Mouse.

My mouse's setup is ok (it works just normally)...and I'm sure I am using the left button.
Before posting this thread I have checked the most common preferences and googled this issue, but I could not find anything useful...
anyway thanks

The reason I think you're probably right-clicking is there is a submenu that opens up and depending on where you are on screen with mouse,
you might duplicate icon.
I just checked and the option to copy to desktop is only available on certain items when right-clicking, so maybe you do have a problem. It's not available to certain icons like the trash folder.

do you have any guess on what the problem can be??
I was wondering if is it a permission issue...the "Permission" tab of my Desktop property says "You are not the owner, so you can't change the permissions.", have a look:
Code:
mattia-laptop:/home/mattia# ls -l
total 76
drwxrwxrwx 4 1001 1001 4096 2011-01-03 14:04 Desktop
drwxr-xr-x 2 mattia mattia 4096 2010-12-18 12:28 folder
is this of any help?

You don't own your Desktop.
Code:
sudo chown -R mattia:mattia /home/mattia/Desktop
should fix it.
Please be VERY careful when you type that command: There are NO spaces in the /home/mattia/Desktop bit
