problem with dvd burner and k3b
 

hello

today i tried to burn some files but i got an error saying :"could not determine size of resulting image file:" im using k3b burnprogram and a samsung dvd-burner on linux mint and a dell laptop.

There are several possibilities, but I shall only touch on the two I know.

If this is a new problem and both the hardware and k3b were working before, it could be a hardware problem. Even relatively new disc burners can develop problems. The one one in my lap-top was fried after about only two years.

If this is a new installation, the problem could be with k3b. Myself, I always use xfburn. It is the most reliable burning application I have used. So you could try another burning application to see if the problem persists.

There is also the possibility that you will need to install a missing package, but that answer will need to wait for someone more knowledgeable.

After having read the hints of other forum members I did some testing after having received the ominous warning myself:

You have to find out what the annoying titles in your K3b portfolio are. Apparently the program does not like special characters in the file titles.

Often they are NOT DISPLAYED CORRECTLY in the listing of the files chosen, but look rather "harmless" - i.e. like "normal" ASCII chars. One hint is that there's an extra space between the line containing the "bad" chars and the next.

To sort them out you should NOT BURN your choice of files directly but use "simulate" instead, which will simply stop in its tracks when it doesn't like a title (while trying to burn the DVD/CD directly resulting in the error message compels you to reinsert the media each time).

After a successful simulation K3b will let you burn your disk; you should not only remove the mark from "simulate" but also set one to "verify" your work in the same panel :).
