Question Problem with Configure, Make, Make Install

I found an application that perfectly matches some of our needs at our facility. It is BandwidthD found on the SourceForge site.

I downloaded the source code file and unzipped it onto my system. No problem so far. Then, the trouble starts..

When I type ./configure I get the following error
-bash: ./configure: No such file or directory

Is the Configure function perhaps a part of an uninstalled RPM package on my machine (running RH 9 btw)

Any insight how I can get this compiled and running? Help a newbie out please!

Any assistance or comments would be greatly appriciated.

Thank you!

Did you look at what files you actually HAVE in that directory? It looks like the configure file doesn't exist.

I advise you to read the INSTALL or README files.

are you sure you're in the newly-created (extracted/unzipped) directory?

if so, using "configure" is common practice, but not universal - there may be other configuration scripts in the tarball - as netmask said the INSTALL/README files should clearly identify them, and any important configuration options/tasks.
