Problem with automount (I think)

When-ever anything tries to access /mnt (eg ls, konqueror), I have to wait up to 30 seconds per CDROM/DVDROM drive before anything else happens. This only happens when the drive has no disc. The drive lights flash during the process so I presume that the automount 'feature' is trying to mount a non-existant disc. Does it really need to take 30 seconds to find no disc? Can this time be reduced without turning off the automount feature? Does it involve getting violent with a large stick? I'd rather not have to have a disc in each drive all the time.

FWIW, I have the same problem in Mdk9 - and unless I have a disc in, I have to wait up to 30secs when opening the Control Centre software manager, too!

Oh well...
