problem with Asian character filename in Redhat

Hello, i am trying to copy a file one external drive to another using Redhat Ent 4. I couldn't do it because the file name is in Asian characters. The filename shown in Redhat is just ????????.pdf.
Is there a way to force it to copy or change the encoding in Redhat somehow so that the copy can be done?

a crude way would be,

try to list, as ? is a wild card charecter.
ls ????????.pdf, if it lists the file just copy the file with
cp ????????.pdf <destination>

but I am skeptical about the file name retention.
