Problem with an order for a Debian DVD
 

I have attempted to order a set of DVD's of Debian. The supplier accepted my payment but has not sent the DVDs. The order went in on 6/30. It is now 7/22. Several attempts asking the status and information on the order has been met with silence. I am not including the website involved because I do not know what the admin's reaction will be.

Any one having the same problem and if so, what the the outcome???

What do you think we'll be able to tell you?? You don't mention the website/supplier name, so how would anyone know if they were having the same problem?

The better question is WHY order a set of Debian DVD's, when you can download the images for free?

I don't see what others might see on these forums so is it possible that you purchased a set from an ad on this forum?

And in most cases, you only need the first one.

LQ "sells" distros?

Unless you tell us where you ordered the discs how do we know whether anybody else has had the same experience?

Bandwidth limits, possibly dial-up connections, ... . I can think of a bunch of reasons for buying DVD sets, not only for Debian, but for any distro.

@kohalajoe: You might want to try to get in touch with the vendor you purchased the DVD set from. If that doesn't work contact a lawyer to help you with that. LQ is not the place to get legal advice from, local lawyers are always better.

TBOne, in answer to your very helpful and wise response, I am a newbie here and as in the post, it is noted that I do not know how the admins will respond to causing issues involving third parties (as noted in one of the behavior rules). The problem is clearly defined - problem with not receiving and order.... The question was has anyone else had the same problem? ( n-o-t r-e-c-e-i-v-i-n-g...) Simple answer is "yes". I am interested in finding if this is common - does not matter who the issue is with for now.

You can contact your credit card company if they charged you directly and did not send you anything. They have policies that have to be followed if they want to continue accepting credit cards.

kohalajoe, the answer to "is it common for people to sell none existent or faulty goods on the internet" is "yes". This is especially true of eBay sellers who offer all kinds of non-working things including Linux distributions. This is why most people will recommend either downloading the relevant files from the distribution web site or buying from a reputable seller. Since y haven't named the seller (regardless of your honourable reasons for not doing so) I am not sure what you expect anybody to be able to do for you?

It was a link in the Debian web site's CD/DVD suppliers page. And yes, I have mentioned this to Debian.org. Basically I am trying to find out if I will be beating a dead horse.

There are policies in place (ie "The Fair Credit Billing Act") to protect you from this EXACT KIND OF THING. This is not a difficult problem to solve.

No, the problem isn't clearly defined, and asking opinions of a reseller isn't bad and wouldn't cause any problems for anyone. Unless you say something like "Has anyone else ever had problems with buying from xxxxx?" there's no way of knowing what you're talking about. Saying "does not matter who the issue is with for now" is ridiculous. That's like saying "Has anyone else ever bought a fake Rolex?"...if you buy it from some guy in a parking lot out of his car trunk, the answer is probably "yes". If you bought it at a high-end jewelry store, probably "no".

As others have said, if you have a problem, contact your credit-card company and get the charge removed, if the vendor won't answer you.

And the "simple answer is yes" can be applied to ANY company, anywhere, selling anything....pick any product and vendor, and see if there aren't people who are dissatisfied with the service. And if you want to be sarcastic, please save that for the mystery vendor you purchased your DVD's from.

If you go to www.distrowatch.com in each distro's page there is a "where to buy" and its a company that has been mentioned here before (and the moderator never said anything about mentioning it). Anyway, no one ever reported problems with that particular company that I know about (I've never dealt with them, though).

I just received a notice that they have shipped. So now I will be getting into Linux for the first time.

They offered an apology and a reason which I accepted.
