problem using ls and dir commands in wu-ftp server
hi,
i have installed wu-ftp in redhat linux 7.3 and i am having problems accessing to my ftp server. I can connect to the server using anonymous or real username but when i hit the ls or dir command at the ftp prompt it says "227 Entering passive mode" and after a long while gives error connection timed out, but when i hit ftp localhost on my ftp server machine , both ls and dir commands list the directory structure, i wonder why it doesn't work from other computers. Thanks, Amit |
Is this any help. Google.com/linux give about 7 hundred million hits on 227 Entering passive mode.:)

it sounds like there is a firewall or router in the way using ip masquerading (a dynamic ip on the line could prove to be a #$%#* to get the masq to work right all the time w/o constant watch updating the dyn ip when lease is up) i am not familiar with wu-ftp, but your problem sounds just like what i ran into ftp'ing (proftpd) over masq'ed dsl dynamic ip address. I have to run 2 ftp server daemons, one for internet (through router ), one for LAN (not routed). You can also config for active (normal) ftp instead of passive, but I don't recommend it (clients in firewall / proxy / routed may not be able to connect). Study the ftp passive protocol and you should find the server ip addy's wrong/changed etc..
