Problem Starting X Server

I'm having trouble getting the GUI to run. At one point it worked, but when I tried other Distro's the GUI wouldn't start. "Could not start X Server". I tried going back to the distro that DID work (Redhat 9.0) but then it too would not work. I've tried Redhat, Debian, Mandrake, and Suse. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

Computer specs
Asus P4P800 Deluxe w/ 800Mhz FSB @ 1000Mhz
2.4Ghz P4 @ 3.0Ghz
1024GB DDR400 Corsair XMS @ 500Mhz
2x 120GB Western Digital special edition HDD
Pioneer 4X DVD-RW
ATI Radeon 9700 pro
Audigy 2 ZS Platinum w/Megaworks 610D

I tried using different default desktop settings maybe thinking it didnt like 1024 x 768 x 24 but it just doesn't want to work period.

it seems you have a pretty spiffy video card there....

by any chance did you install the driver for it and then begin forarying around in the XF86Config file?

we need the exact error message and a copy of your XFree86 if you could. I don't see why suse wouldn't work... that bad boy is a pain to not get straight into X.
