problem playing cd

Hi all,
I'm trying to play an audio CD using the CD player utility. What happens is, the drive is busy (showing the busy light), the cd player also shows the the cd being played but it shows all tracks as unknown. Inside the cd player window it says unknown. I had burnt this audio cd in winxp from MP3 files. Does it have anything with CD burnt in windows.

Help would be greatly appreciated...thanks

redhat doesn't support mp3 files out of the box. it's some kind of licsening issue. you'll have to install mp3 support first. have a look here

that narrows it to 9 threads, all of which should shed some light on your issue.
good luck.

I have mp3's on my machine and i can play them very well using xmms so i think the problem is different here. I am trying to play an audio cd and it has no sound although i can see the cd is running and the track being advanced.

You possibly don't have an analogue audio cable from your CD player to your soundcard.

Windows Media Player uses Digital Audio Extraction, which means that you don't need the audio cable. You can get a plugin for xmms called cdread (I think) that enablex xmms to do Digital Audio Extraction. http://www.xmms.org. Once it is installed, simply select Play CD from the XMMS menu.

As far as I know, the other CD players such as KCD need the Audio cable installed.

I hope this helps

sorry i assumed you hadn't installed the mp3 support. IBall is on the right track w/the audio cable. one other thing to check would be /etc/fstab, look at the permissions on the cdrom.
good luck.
