Problem on Changing boot screen (verbose to silent)

Dear all,
I am trying to change boot screen from "Control centre", even I put the setting (by applying, of course) no change on boot screen.
I want silent mode that comes without loading texts.
I tried to open /boot/grub/menu.lst on root it says "permission denied". However, I viewed it with Kwriter, there the splash=silent. I can't see what is wrong.
Thanks.
(I also have problems on installing Wengophone, Webcam and USB stick tv tuner)

OS is Mandriva 2008 release 2.6.22.9 desktop
LCD 15" Philips 150C

have you tried to open kwrite with root powers

2 main ways of doing it....if you use KDE create a new icon...rename as su-kwrite and in the application/advanced button...choose user root

b) open a shell...su to root then issue command kwrite.

.....then navigate into /boot/grub/menu.lst

I do not have a Wengophone, Webcam and USB stick tv tuner but check the HCL then if no hints....post separate posts in hardware or MDV

Many thanks AUS9, I'll try to follow your instructions. I'm in my Windows right now.
Cheers!
