Problem loading the kernel after installing MDK 9.1, Please help!
 

Hi, I just installed MDK9.1 on an old e-machine I had lying around. The install went fine, and everything worked, But when I tried to reboot, after the lilo, when it tries to load the kernel, it seems like it is stuck in an infinite loop. The messages are scrolling by too fast to read them, but what I can get looks something like :

[00C013923] and then something else here...

Does anybody know what this could be, and how to fix it. I'm running an old e-machine, I think it's got 320 megs of RAM, an nvidia voodoo 5 video card, and pretty slow (?) processor. Thanks for any help.

Use a linux boot disk to get the log files pertaining to your boot up. And look through them or post them here so we can take a look at them.

oh and nvidia never made vodoo cards, 3dfx made them :) just for future reference.

Ok, I tried to make a boot image, but the install doesn't seem to find my floppy drive. Instead, I upgraded the install to the higher security level, and it said it rebuilt the kernel. When I rebooted into the linux-secure, here is the error message I got:

Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address

That's the best I can get for right now...I understand if that isn't enough info to go on. Thanks for any help, though.

Ok there is something the kernel doesn't like about your machine what that is is tough to tell. Have you tried running knoppix, its a distro that runs directly from CD, or perhaps Red Hat? and If you are really adventureuous you could attempt Gentoo although if you are not on broadband this options probably aren't a reality.

OK I did a little googleing and came up with something for you to think about. It seems that error can be related to problems with the hard disk having errors in your swap partion. you may want to run a utility to check the disk for errors.

I'll try to fool around with it some tonight and tomorrow morning, and report back when something works (or doesn't). Thanks for the help...
