Problem launching nagios

I've already completed the nagios installation steps as per the Nagios Quickstart Userguide.

But now, when I try to launch nagios through the browser :

http://localhost/nagios, I'm returned with an error :

Code:

Hi,

Did you configure Apache to listen to the IP you're connecting to or just on localhost? Did you configure a virtual host for Nagios in the Apache configuration?

Kind regards,

Eric

anaigini45 12-29-2009 02:39 AM

Could you please explain how to do that? Coz I do not know what and how to do so...

EricTRA 12-29-2009 02:49 AM

Are you connecting to Nagios on the same machine as where it is installed? Or from another machine? On what distro do you have Nagios installed?

On the Nagios machine type:
Code:

netstat -al | grep apache2
or
Code:

netstat -al | grep http
and put the output here.

Kind regards,

Eric

anaigini45 12-29-2009 03:05 AM

I've installed nagios in the same machine that I'm trying to run it - my monitoring host laptop. The distro I'm using is PCLinuxOS.

The output from netstat -al | grep http :

Code:

Ok,

I'm not familiar with PCLinuxOS so I'll try to stick to general Linux commands which should work. Type:
Code:

ps -ef | grep apache
to see if apache is running. Also, in either of both locations (whichever applies to your distro) you should encounter your configuration files. There should be a httpd.conf or apache2.conf and a ports.conf. From the ports.conf file post what Listen directive you encounter. And attach or post the contents of httpd.conf or apache2.conf, whichever you use.

Kind regards,

Eric

junaid18183 12-29-2009 03:37 AM

Please confirm that Nagios service is running.

Please check out post for installing Nagios

Code:

[root@localhost ~]# ps -ef | grep apache
root    20957  5669  0 17:57 pts/1    00:00:00 grep --color apache

Code:

Where is ports.conf located? I can't find it.

This is httpd.conf :

Code:

#
# This is the main Apache HTTP server configuration file.  It contains the
# configuration directives that give the server its instructions.
# See <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2> for detailed information.
# In particular, see
# <URL:http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.2/mod/directives.html>
# for a discussion of each configuration directive.
#
# Do NOT simply read the instructions in here without understanding
# what they do.  They're here only as hints or reminders.  If you are unsure
# consult the online docs. You have been warned.
#
# Configuration and logfile names: If the filenames you specify for many
# of the server's control files begin with "/" (or "drive:/" for Win32), the
# server will use that explicit path.  If the filenames do *not* begin
# with "/", the value of ServerRoot is prepended -- so "logs/foo.log"
# with ServerRoot set to "/opt/lampp" will be interpreted by the
# server as "/opt/lampp/logs/foo.log".

#
# ServerRoot: The top of the directory tree under which the server's
# configuration, error, and log files are kept.
#
# Do not add a slash at the end of the directory path.  If you point
# ServerRoot at a non-local disk, be sure to point the LockFile directive
# at a local disk.  If you wish to share the same ServerRoot for multiple
# httpd daemons, you will need to change at least LockFile and PidFile.
#
ServerRoot "/opt/lampp"

#
# Listen: Allows you to bind Apache to specific IP addresses and/or
# ports, instead of the default. See also the <VirtualHost>
# directive.
#
# Change this to Listen on specific IP addresses as shown below to
# prevent Apache from glomming onto all bound IP addresses.
#
#Listen 12.34.56.78:80
Listen 80

Hi,

You should have stated earlier that your using XAMPP, then I'd have known what and where the configuration is located. First of all, looking at your httpd.conf I don't see an Alias nor directory statement for it. Add it like this, substituting the path to nagios:
Code:

Alias /nagios "/full/path/to/nagios"

<Directory "/full/path/to/nagios">
        Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes
        AllowOverride All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
</Directory>

Then reload apache by typing in a terminal:
Code:

/opt/lampp/lampp reloadapache
Then try again to access nagios by typing in a browser:
Code:

http://localhost/nagios
If it doesn't work by reloading apache then restart xampp by typing in a terminal:
Code:

/opt/lampp/lampp restart
and check for any errors.

Kind regards,

Eric

anaigini45 12-29-2009 05:14 AM

It does not prompt for username and password. It logs in to a page where the index of nagios is displayed.

/bin,/etc,/include,/libexec,/sbin,/share, & /var are displayed. When I click on /share, it displays the nagios home page. But there, when I click on services, I receive the same error :

Code:

Object not found.
Error 404 localhost

EricTRA 12-29-2009 05:22 AM

What did you set as full path to nagios in the httpd.conf file? The fact that you're not prompted for a username and password is normal since it's not indicated in the Directory directive. If you want to add that option you should add something like this to the directive, of course pointing to your user file:
Code:

        AuthType Basic
        AuthName "Private Access"
        AuthUserFile "/fullpath/to/nagios/.htpasswd"
        Require valid-user

Kind regards,

Eric

anaigini45 12-29-2009 08:07 AM

Please explain how do I point to my user file. I don't understand that statement.

And is this the right way to put it? And I have to put it in the httpd.conf file right?

Code:

<Directory "/full/path/to/userfile">
    AuthTypeBasic
    Auth Name "Private Access"
    Auth UserFile "/fullpath/to/nagios/.htpasswd"
    Required valid-user
</Directory>

Please understand coz I'm quite new to this...

EricTRA 12-29-2009 08:15 AM

Hello,

I don't know which Quick Start Guide you followed but in the three I encountered using Google they state the following command to created the htpassword file:
Code:

htpasswd -c /usr/local/nagios/etc/htpasswd.users nagiosadmin
Have you run that command? Or can you indicate exactly which QuickStart Guide you followed?

As I stated in earlier to enable the authentication you have to ADD it to the Dirctory directive in the httpd.conf file. This would be the complete definition:
Code:

<Directory "/full/path/to/nagios">
        Options Indexes FollowSymLinks ExecCGI Includes
        AllowOverride All
        Order allow,deny
        Allow from all
        AuthTypeBasic
        Auth Name "Private Access"
        Auth UserFile "/fullpath/to/nagios/.htpasswd"
        Required valid-user
</Directory>

Kind regards,

Eric

You should have followed the quickstart guide that comes in the nagios tar.gz file your downloaded.

Can you please post the contents of your nagios.cfg file? It is located at /usr/local/nagios/etc/nagios.cfg
