That is astonishing, wine was never part of a standard installation, and cannot be selected at install time in Debian.
You are correct, in the days when I was going to make everything that works in wins work on linux, I must have installed it, because I booted up the old Dell Optiplex Gx1 and it was not there, so I installed it to show you what I thought was wine.
