Problem Installing SLES

Hi everyone!

As I'm a bit of a Linux nb you will have to bear with me....

I decided that I should set up an install of Linux at home to play around on and learn about it etc. So I bought a cheap blade server to install it on (Its an Intel server board, 2 x 250Gb HDD, 2 x 2.4Ghz xeon CPU, 2Gb RAM).

A friend of mine gave me an installation disk for SLES to use, install seemed to work ok - once all the components are installed it reboots the system.

I expected to get a boot loader (GRUB?) when the machine is rebooted, but instead I just get a flashing cursor. It will not boot at all.

What have I done / not done or do I need to provide more information?

Thanks for any help in advance!

Marcus

you have my friend what we call a kernel panic. please set the bios to none os or none windows or none plug n play. make sure your sles kernel is good for 2gb. then reinstall it if you have some SCSI devices that need special drivers you should have them ready. what has happend most likley the boot loader did not go on to the MBR so please put it on the MBR and always make the boot floppy or disk . . good luck. that is Linux way of saying this disk is not a bootable disk.

I checked BIOS and couldnt find any settings like this, however I got myself a copy of Ubuntu and that went on with no problem at all ... hmmm

Rekon Ubuntu is good enough for learning on? Thanks for the reply btw.
