Problem Installing Red Hat Enterprise 4
 

Hi,
I am kind of new to Linux. I am trying to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (Desktop solution) on PII 400 MHZ machine. I have downloaded ISO images from REDHAT site and created CD's (4 in all). I used X-CD-Roast (CD burner that comes with Red Hat 8) to create CD's.
I have set the boot sequence to CDROM, C, A. Hard drive is of Segate (20 GB).
Problem: After starting the box it finds the OS CD. Then it starts "verifying DMI pool data" & hangs up. It will not proceed no matter what I do. Can anyone tell me whats wrong? Is there any problem in CD's or HW configuration?

Did you check the md5sum signature first before burning the ISO?

Hi,
I am new to linux and trying to learn. After doing some research on the Internet I found a solution. If I can use smart boot manager I can tackle this problem (Actually it is quite well known problem). What smart boot manager does is it allows you to create a bootable floppy or CD. Steps are
1) Create bootable floppy or CD using smart boot manager (open source tool)
2) If its a floppy set the boot sequence A,C
3) AFter boot smart boot manager prompt should appear.
4) then select CDROM drive and insert OS CD in the ROM
and problem solved

You shouldn't need a 3rd party "boot manager tool thingie whatever"... redhat has its own boot floppy maker ... you can even use it on Windows. However, if you like, knock yourself out. :D

I think I know about REDHATs own boot manager. But this tool is amazing. Being opensource, it can be downloaded freely. So if you have older versions of RedHat still you can use this tool.
For reference: tool name is "Smart boot manager"
