Problem installing my on board network
 
Hi

I'm using openSuse 10.3 and a HP 8000 Elite.
The installation didnt recognize the on-board network. All the windows drivers provided are for PRO/1000 Ethernet Adapter so I conclude my on-board is one.
e1000 and e1000e is already present in my installation.

I tried to

modprobe e1000
service network restart

and

modprobe e1000e
service network restart

But my eth is not up for both cases.
where did it go wrong?

No way to tell from what you've told us. First, is this a new installation?? Because the latest openSUSE is 11.2, so if you're installing 10.3 for the first time, save yourself alot of headaches, and install 11.2. And did you try to go into YAST, and configure your network adapter? Is it present there?

It says...

unable to configure the network card because the kernel device is not available

Ok, when did you get this message? What were you doing?

And I had asked several questions in my first post, but you didn't answer any of them.

- Is this a new installation?
- Does the card show up in YAST?

Does anything show up in dmesg, related to the card?

Yes it is.

No, it didn't

Don't think so. Words like network, ethernet, LAN didnt show up in dmesg




I used a opensuse 11.2 livecd and the onboard network works. The module it used is e1000e. modinfo shows ver 1.0.2-k2.
Going to dl e1000e from intel and hope it works.

I solved it.

This solution goes to both DELL Optiplex 780 and HP Compaq 8000 Elite

I dl opensuse 11.2 LIVECD. Boot it up and check the module it uses.
As I expected, e1000e.

Then I dl opensuse 10.3 full dvd and install. Previously I used a livecd to install.

I checked and found out my onboard network card is 8256LM
Dl driver from Intel
http://downloadmirror.intel.com/1581...-1.1.19.tar.gz

Followed instruction inside.

And bang, up online.

Glad you're working...but installing 10.3 is a bit odd, when the current release is 11.2, and would have solved your problem right off the bat, as I mentioned in my first post.

Not trying to belabor the point, but why, after testing with 11.2 live, did you then download 10.3 instead of 11.2? Doesn't make sense to me but I'm an old fuddy. I'd strongly recommend downloading and installing 11.2 (or 11.3 which will be publically available mid July). They have added many new features since 10.2 and improved the security quite a bit.

I agree totally. However, given the time frame (11.3 is in Release Candidate 1 right now), I'd probably just wait a month or so, and go straight to 11.3.
