Problem installing CentOS 5.5 from DVD

Hi All,

I have downloaded the following CentOS 5.5 DVD iso files and burn the same using Nero Express:

1. CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso (4.09 GB)
2. CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-2of2.iso (412 MB)

I am trying installing it on a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop.

I could boot the machine successfully with the DVD 01. After selecting the Installation method as "Local CDROM" it says:

CD Not Found:
The CentOS CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the CentOS CD and press OK to retry

and it ejects the DVD in a splash. I tried mounting the DVD in a DVD drives in Windows XP SP2 and it is showing the content correctly. I also tried mounting the iso file with PowerISO Virtual Drive manager in Windows XP SP2 and it is mounting well.

I tried many times but of no success. Earlier I tried the following also (before downloading the DVD image files):

1. I successfully installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition on the same machine.
2. The same machine is also working fine with CentOS 5.5 Live CD.

Please suggest.

Hi,

You can try instead network installation
http://www.if-not-true-then-false.co...-installation/

Thanks for the quick reply.

Actually I have already put effort downloading the DVDs using the torrent. If I go for network-install option, it will again choke my bandwidth. Is there a way to utilize the DVD iso files (already downloaded) for installing the CentOS 5.5 on my laptop.

Otherwise I would need to download all the eight CD Image files.

No answers to my question and finally I have downloaded the entire 8 CD set and installing CentOS 5.5 x86.

One more thing I would like to ask:
Is there any use of the DVDs I downloaded earlier. Why was the DVD Set put in there for download through torrent? Is it not wasting people's valuable time in downloading 4.5 GB Data. Especially for Newbies who do not know much about the type of installation.

Anybody out there?

These are direct dvd downloads
http://www.centos.org/modules/tinyco...ndex.php?id=30

When I burn iso's from winsxp I use cdburnerxp it works well.
I've also been reading that burning iso's at a slow speed actually minimalizes errors.

htongaria 02-04-2011 03:01 AM

I think there is some confusion out there.

Let me explain once again:

1. I had downloaded the following DVD image files and burnt them to the DVD media
i. CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-1of2.iso (4.09 GB) (On a DVD media)
ii. CentOS-5.5-x86_64-bin-DVD-2of2.iso (412 MB) (On a CD Media as it asked for)

2. I successfully boot the machine using DVD 1of2
3. I then selected option 1 from there (Install CentOS in GUI mode)
4. Further I chose the location, keyboard and language
5. The it asked for the type of installation and the options were:
1. CD ROM
ii. HDD
iii. FTP
iv. HTTP... etc.
6. When I selected the CD ROM as installation type. It just did an eject in a flash and said that the CD Drive does not contain correct CentOS installation CD ROM. Although I could mount the disk properly and was able view the files and directory structure but still was not able to install from it.

Here are the content of the DVD 1

Now do you still say that my DVDs are wrongly burnt?

My question: Is there any use of those DVDs?

I doubt it, as you downloaded 8 disk set and the dvd's didn't work for you.

htongaria 02-04-2011 05:50 AM

It was not let me install through DVD that's why I downloaded 8 CD Set

Now installation from CD set went OK.

I have a nice set of coasters that I need to get rid of. Even if you can extract packages from them they're probably outdated with all the updates that come after a while. Most of them are over a year old.

The question still exists:

If we can not do installation from DVD isos then why is it available for download?

knudfl 02-04-2011 08:07 AM

The DVD is usually OK.

The list in post # 6 : It's all wrong.
epodata <DIR>
mages <DIR>
entOS <DIR>
solinux <DIR>
OTES <DIR>
etc. etc. : The first letter in all file names is missing.

It should be :
repodata <DIR>
images <DIR>
CentOS <DIR>
isolinux <DIR>
NOTES <DIR>
etc.

A corrupt image ? Or just a bad burn ?

..

The first char was truncated from each line. It was copy-paste error.
The actual files are:

My question stands still there.

If you have external DVD drive, you should try to use external DVD drive. I have encounter same problem with Dell hardwares.
I am not saying your internal DVD drive is not working. Normally, CentOS is using older sysresccd image to build installer CD.
