Read the "Question Guidelines". You don't give us ANY details at all about your system, tell us if this is a new installation or old, what, if anything has changed recently, or any messages you get. We can't guess. Also, RHEL 5 is VERY old, and totally unsupported, and is a commercial, pay-for distro. Have you looked in the Red Hat knowlegebase, since as a paying customer (RIGHT?) you have access to them?

Best guess: you put in the wrong password. Put in the right one.

If you have access to the RHEL5 system console you can interrupt the boot to go to a root prompt without the password.

As TB0ne notes, RHEL5 went end of life a few years back after more than 10 years of life. It has various known security holes that aren't going to be patched. You really need to think about upgrading to a later version (RHEL6 is going EOL next year, RHEL7 has been available for a few years now and RHEL8 is now available).

if you can try a different keyboard (one with lights indicating if CAPS LOCK is on) because keyboards do go bad and can cause mysterious "can't log in" issue. also (advanced) there's a file in /etc/ that says which (console/terminal) root can log into. make sure your logging in as root on an allowed (console/terminal)

what kind of keyboard have you?

now - failing that. plug your system disk to another pc box that runs linux, mount the drive, fix the password issue by editing files, optionally chroot in so you know it works, put the disk back into it's home box and reboot. now it must work.

Hence the "If" in what I said. If they don't have the console and they don't know the root password they're going to be SOL unless they want to dig for esoteric exploits.
