problem in installing RedHat Linux AS4 on SATA hard drive
Hi,
I have a problem in installing Red Hat Linux AS4 on a SATA hard drive. when i followed the regular installation procedure, the hard was not detected. I was able to install the OS using apic and noapic cmds. However, when i try to reboot the system, the kernel does not load. I'd glad if some one helps me out. New to Linux. Do i have to change the kernel parameters or run some scripts? Regards Gautam. |
I can not make out which kernel you are using but last time I used RHEL4, it did not have drivers for SATA.

It is about the SATA chip on the mother board.
Not the SATA HD itself. ( SATA II ? ? ). The later the EL4, the better chances. I have EL 4.3 installed, no problems. ( The motherboard with SATA is five years old ). EL 4.8 with e.g kernel-2.6.9-89.0.3.EL.i586.rpm probably have more drivers included. Suggest 1 : Use the 4.8 install cd's / DVD. Suggest 2 : Run a live cd and try : lspci -v | grep SATA .. and ask Redhat. ..... |
Another better way, if you do not have the paid red hat subscription, is to use CentOS. The latest is 5.4.
