problem in installing and opening skype.
 
hi everybody,
iam using 64bits RHEL6 on my machine and i have configure my local repo. i have download skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm and installed but i was not able to run skype,


first try,


# rpm -ivh skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm

1:skype ########################################### [100%]


# rpm -q skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm
package skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm is not installed


# rpm -e skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm
error: package skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm is not installed


second try


# yum remove skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm
Loaded plugins: aliases, refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin

after installing skype i was able to see skype icon in application > internet > skype but i was not able to run if i check using the following commands, the output are as follows,

# rpm -q skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm
package skype-2.1.0.81-fc10.i586.rpm is not installed

can anybody guide me because iam new to linux and all kinds of suggestion are accepted if someone guide me in right way i'll be greatful.

This is why we have mentioned several times that you should be paying for RHEL6 if you are so insistent on using it. It's like $6 a month. Either you can afford it or you can switch to CentOS. This is not the first time this has been explained to you, in fact several members have explained it in more detail than I can in multiple threads of yours.

LOTS of folks have told you that, and asked WHY you need RHEL, but you've never answered or acknowledged until now.

And if Skype won't run, have you tried just running it from the command-line, to see what error(s) you get? And I will say AGAIN, that unless you NEED RHEL (or a similar 'server-grade' distro), you SHOULD NOT LOAD IT. Server distros don't typically support cameras, mics, bluetooth, sound cards, etc....since a real server does not HAVE any of those devices.

If you are just looking for Linux to run on your desktop and get familiar with it, or even take RHCE, load Fedora instead. Basically the same, but your hardware will work.

actually iam a student and previously iam using windows xp in my machine. recently i have finished my rhel6 SA-I,SA-II and SA-III but i try to learn more and planning to give exam of RHCE if possible. so iam still using RHEL6, do i have to use centOS or RHEL6 for preparing for RHCE exams....?

Would have been nice if you had explained this the first time people mentioned RHEL.

Re-read my last post, and the posts others have given you in other threads. AGAIN, CentOS or Scientific linux are almost IDENTICAL to RHEL, but are free. Again, Fedora can also be used, since most of what you're going to be tested on is available in FC or RHEL.

And this doesn't have bearing on your skype problem....did you try what was suggested?? Still having a problem?
