Problem getting modem to work
 

I installed a dual boot PCI internal 56k modem to use on both Windows and Linux. When I'm in Mepis v6.5.02, it finds the modem just fine and I can hear it connect but then I get an error message. The PPP log file is below:

Please tell more about the modem, you will not belief how many modem manufacturers there are which use different controls.

So please brand name, model number and chipset..if known

Sure, it's a Zoom 56k v90 PCI, model 2920. In XP it shows up as an Actiontec 56k. Here's the link from their web site: http://www.zoom.com/products/dial_up_internal.html . Just scroll down till you see the 2920 model. Thanks.

This modem seems to create a additional serial port, if you install this modem into a computer which already has 2 serial ports it will install itself as serial 3 port.

If you use a serial mouse on the first serial port this can conflict with the 3th serial port.

I know it is highly unlikely you use a serial mouse....

You know if your modem is in your hardware list and on which serial port it is active?

Are you running 64bit Mepis?

No, I'm running the regular 32 bit i386 version of Mepis. Mepis uses KDE 3.5, where would I find the serial port connections in that OS? In XP Pro, it's just showing as a regular modem.

I'm not familiar with Mepis, but it is nothing to worry about if you're running a current version of Mepis, IRQ's are what matters here, and most mainstream distributions use irqbalance which juggles the irq's so there is not conflicts. Just like in Windows, a pci modem will usually be assigned to com port 3, which is like a third serial port.
The reason I asked about the architecture is that only Lucent Win modem with mars chip set for pci modems can run on 64bit Linux.
Have you looked in the main menu under administration or system for "network", you can configure a modem through here.
