problem extracting .tar.gz file??
 
im trying to download themes from the "art manager" and whenever i install them and try to open them it says "cannot install theme: there was a problem extracting the theme". today is my first time on linux (using ubuntu 8.10) and i just have not become totally familiar with it yet (trying to switch from vista) ANY help on the matter would be GREATLY appreciated...... thanks in advace guys!!

I don't know about themes. However, if you have a .tar.gz file, the file is gzipped and tarred. A tar file is a file that contains a directory (which may also contain files). A .gz file, is a file that has been gzipped. You can unzip and untar the file with the following command:

tar -xvzf file.tar.gz

For Gnome, a theme file MUST NOT BE UNTARED .You install it as a tar.gz from the
system/ preferences/ look and feel / appearance

and use the " install " button

If you simply drag the tar file to the theme settings, it automatically installs it for your. As easy as point and click :)
