I don't know about themes. However, if you have a .tar.gz file, the file is gzipped and tarred. A tar file is a file that contains a directory (which may also contain files). A .gz file, is a file that has been gzipped. You can unzip and untar the file with the following command:
tar -xvzf file.tar.gz |
For Gnome, a theme file MUST NOT BE UNTARED .You install it as a tar.gz from the
system/ preferences/ look and feel / appearance and use the " install " button |
If you simply drag the tar file to the theme settings, it automatically installs it for your. As easy as point and click :)
