problem: edject cd rom case w/ mandrake 9.0
 

hello linux-friends:

this is the third box i'm having problem with, so i guess it maybe the OS problem, or maybe i haven't got the configuration right....

here's the problem:
if there's cd (like movie or mp3) in the cd rom, alot of time if i press the eject button at the cd rom, the cd case won't come out.
all it does is the light flash for a little bit, and nothiong happen, what i have to do is to right click the cd rom icon on my desk top and choose "eject". which i'm fine with it. but the annoying part comes right here ------


if you right click cd rom icon, and choose eject to take out your cd case, your cd case will edject and insert back into the cd rom right away!?!?!?!?! (so basically i on ly got about 1 sec to grab my cd before the darn on thing goes back into the cd rom)

anyone have experience with this? i thought it was my box problem to begin with, but this is the third box i have linux installed, and same thing kept happening, i was wondering if there's a conf file or something i can edit so i don't have to "race" with my cd case to grab my cd out of it?

p.s: i'm using mandrake 9.0, running kde 3

If you have any application or file browser or console window etc accessing the drive, close it before trying to eject the disk.

If that doesn't work try disabling supermount and see if that fixes the problem. See man supermount for details.

Open a terminal and type "umount /mnt/cdrom" (w/o the quotes) or whatever your cdrom is called. Linux will no longer be trying to use it and so shouldn't try to grab it back.

thank you michaelk, and XavierP, i shut down the program (included the window) that is using the cd-rom and i'm able to eject the cd rom without problem ^_^

hope it's ok to jump in here with a question.

this is my first post, indeed I've only had a linux system really for a day (though some experiences with unix at school)
it already seems to me that the gui isn't really the way to navigate. >>> ( why walk when you can fly?)

my question is how do you edject the cd from the terminal?

I'd love to click your button Xavier,... but unmounting the cd doesn't edject it on my system. Does it on yours?

That's what I was thinking. I though it was eject /dev/cdrom or whatever the device is for your cdrom. It is eject /dev/cdroms/cdrom0 for me, crazy udev. It's sticking out as I type. Wonder how you get it back in? I'll just push it. :D
