problem after problem

OK so ive installed ubuntu after getting too sick of windows installation went well BUT after that im completly stuck.
here are the problems im having:

1.wireless setting (WPA key) keeps resetting everytime i restart my pc ... annoying!

2.i cant seem to install ANYTHING i get errors about unable to extract/read ect. im using wine for all windows based programs im trying to install and makes no difference at all the only thing that has installed so far is ultraiso yet that doesn't work (opens up but you can select any files or directorys ect ect)

3.ive tried to update my graphics card driver (since the one im using is a default driver offering no ecceleration support or anything else) yet the hardware drivers app. doesnt want to download anything (unable to resolve blah blah addess) so i tried using the terminal through someones suggestion which sort of worked but i had to disable x server ... tried someones suggestion on how to disable it but it didn't do anything (through the virtual terminal)

4.i installed iso master (a package i found in package manager) which opens i find the iso file i want to extract ... and suprise it doesnt extract it does nothing at all i can right click it a select view which opens up firefox but thats it the tab remains untitled and doesnt display anything.

the list could go on some more but these are just the few things that are really getting on my tits.

could someone plz plz help me solve these problems?

the apps i want to install most atm are

mcafee 07? since atm im running on NO anti virus or the the likes.

eveonline (http://eveonline.com) i got the installer for it but it cant extract the files no reason given thats all it says (i followed the advise given on the wine website)

i need to get dx9 running

i KNOW all apart from mcafee will run on ubuntu, havn't seen anyone run mcafee on it thats all so not sure if that would be possible however cant see it being impossible

im also trying to install drivers for my geforce 6200 mentioned earlier

so anyways that my list ill add to it once the problems ive got atm have been solved! :D
again plz help i really want to understand how to use ubuntu and dont ever want to resort to windows ever again.
thanks in advance

You don't need an antivirus for too many reasons to list now.
For your first point, you'll need the key-ring programme, but you say you're having trouble installing. Can you try and install something now and give us the exact error message please.

I don't understand you're third point, and your fourth point; the tools exist on ubuntu for that without any downloads.

Oh, please use English; people tend to ignore posts with poor language used, they're too hard to read.

billymayday 06-11-2009 09:29 PM

It would help if you told people which version of ubuntu you were running.

For question 4, I'm not clear what you are trying to achieve, but if you want to look in the iso, you should simply mount it:

Code:

cd
mkdir iso_mount
sudo mount -o loop /path/to/iso ./iso_mount
ls iso_mount

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 09:56 PM

i am sorry i rushed it a little bit.

im running ubuntu 8.04

with the .iso's im trying to extract them (so i can install them at a later date once ive figured out how to do so)

ok ill accept i dont need any anti-virus (thanks for clearing that problem up) ill give the key-ring programme a try now

and as for problems installing:

im currently trying to install the eveonline client at the moment it is .... and omg wtf all of a sudden its working i think will have to wait until it finishes to see if it will play.

(tried playing it from my windows directory on another HDD it opened up the programs splash screen then thats it.
i checked in system monitor and its status went from undisruptable - sleeping - "zombie")

that key-ring where can i find it? is it in synaptic package manager?

for my third point im talking about system>administration>hardwaredrivers the gfx card isnt present in there any more (which would suggest that it installed) but i cannot adjust my screen resolution above 1280 x 1024 and i cant enable normal visual effect from system>preferences>appearance/screen resolution.

jamescondron 06-11-2009 10:02 PM

Ok, please, I've already asked this, but can we stick to plain English.

The ISO files; you could either do as billymayday suggested and mount them, or you could burn them to a disk and run the disk, this being generally what ISO files are for.

I thought you were having trouble installing anything from your original post. Are you able to install things? And to install a keyring, I believe it is gnome-keyring-manager in Ubuntu. Open a terminal and install via:
Code:

sudo apt-get install gnome-keyring-manager
You'll find using the terminal, whilst daunting the first time you try it, is a hell of a lot quicker than using point-and-click stuff.

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 10:13 PM

"$ sudo apt-get install gnome-keyring-manager
[sudo] password for kurt:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?"

this was what came up when i enter sudo apt-get install gnome-keyring-manager into the terminal.

i must ask what is wrong with my english? since i am 100% english i am lost as to what you mean there might be 1 or 2 typo's
but not everyones perfect.

im sorry i forgot to mention mounting them didnt work when i tried before told me the file directory doesnt exist so im guessing im entering the directory wrong i currently have them in my "home" folder so would that not be:

example

cd
mkdir iso_mount
sudo mount -o loop /home/user/iso to mount.iso ./iso_mount
ls iso_mount

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 10:18 PM

oh also on the topic of installing programs, so far the programs ive tried to install have actually installed now. not sure what was wrong with them before.
however the eveonline client ive been trying to run doesnt run still the splash screen opens then it disappears (normal) then where it should open up a login screen it doesnt and under system monitor it ends up with the zombie status

billymayday 06-11-2009 10:19 PM

Show exact command you used and any errors please.

In reference to English, capitalization is good, as is avoiding terms such as plz

jamescondron 06-11-2009 10:20 PM

Exactly right on the mount command. Remember, every command has a manual (a 'man' page) so for mount, you'd hit
Code:

man mount
the English point I was making was for netspeak.

Right, those errors, you could cheat and do a reboot to free it up, or you could run the following
Code:

ps aux|grep dpk
ps aux|grep apt
ps aux|grep synaptic

'ps' is the command for processes. To work out what the 'aux' part means, try the man page for it ;)
The verticle line is a pipe, that means 'Take the result of the command on the left, and pass it to the command on the right'- the command on the right is essentially to search through the result for the text given (dpk/apt/synaptic).

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 10:38 PM

kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ cd
kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ mkdir iso_mount
kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ sudo mount -o loop /home/kurt/backup/Empire earth III [PC-DVD] [English] [www.topetorrent.com]/Empire earth III [PC-DVD] [English] [www.topetorrent.com].iso ./iso_mount
[sudo] password for kurt:
Usage: mount -V : print version
mount -h : print this help
mount : list mounted filesystems
mount -l : idem, including volume labels
So far the informational part. Next the mounting.
The command is `mount [-t fstype] something somewhere'.
Details found in /etc/fstab may be omitted.
mount -a [-t|-O] ... : mount all stuff from /etc/fstab
mount device : mount device at the known place
mount directory : mount known device here
mount -t type dev dir : ordinary mount command
Note that one does not really mount a device, one mounts
a filesystem (of the given type) found on the device.
One can also mount an already visible directory tree elsewhere:
mount --bind olddir newdir
or move a subtree:
mount --move olddir newdir
One can change the type of mount containing the directory dir:
mount --make-shared dir
mount --make-slave dir
mount --make-private dir
mount --make-unbindable dir
One can change the type of all the mounts in a mount subtree
containing the directory dir:
mount --make-rshared dir
mount --make-rslave dir
mount --make-rprivate dir
mount --make-runbindable dir
A device can be given by name, say /dev/hda1 or /dev/cdrom,
or by label, using -L label or by uuid, using -U uuid .
Other options: [-nfFrsvw] [-o options] [-p passwdfd].
For many more details, say man 8 mount .

ok must have been an update I installed that made things work. what do i do with it now though? call me stupid but it all made little sense to me

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 10:47 PM

jamescondron thanks for "man" helped me understand a little bit more. can man be used for any command?

jamescondron 06-11-2009 10:48 PM

Right, Spaces in filenames; every filesystem handles them differently, in Unix filesystems we have to escape the space, or they're classed as different arguments- DOS does similar, I beleive it is the first 5 chars, tilde, int.

Incidentally, you'll not get a Windows programme to work on Linux without using a lot of emulator stuff...

But look at the output there, it doesn't do anything you'd find useful, it gives you a usage guide. A usage guide is pretty much standard behaviour when you don't start the programme correctly, so in this case, you didn't start it correctly.

The reason this time is because of spaces in your file name.

EDIT: And yes, or at least; more or less- try it ;) Remember, you'll struggle to break anything, but yes, about 99% of programmes have man pages

billymayday 06-11-2009 10:50 PM

Is that really the iso name?

Try

Code:

sudo mount -o loop "/home/kurt/backup/Empire earth III [PC-DVD] [English] [www.topetorrent.com]/Empire earth III [PC-DVD] [English] [www.topetorrent.com].iso" ./iso_mount
The spaces are treated as delimiters

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 10:53 PM

"kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-keyring-manager
[sudo] password for kurt:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package gnome-keyring-manager is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package gnome-keyring-manager has no installation candidate"

awww close but atleast i found out what needed closing so i could atleast try and install :)

jamescondron 06-11-2009 10:54 PM

Well, you can search for a package with
Code:

apt-cache search
and then whatever you want to search for. Search for "gnome keyring"

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:01 PM

I have renamed It now to a shorter name so i tried that and here is the result (i ttok it you meant remove the spaces in the filename as you enter the command)

"cd
kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ mkdir iso_mount
mkdir: cannot create directory `iso_mount': File exists
kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ sudo mount -o loop /home/kurt/backup/EmpireearthIII/EmpireearthIII.iso ./iso_mount
/home/kurt/backup/EmpireearthIII/EmpireearthIII.iso: No such file or directory
kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ ls iso_mount
kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ "

maybe i just fail

jamescondron 06-11-2009 11:03 PM

Your major clue is
Code:

/home/kurt/backup/EmpireearthIII/EmpireearthIII.iso: No such file or directory
Sure you changed it correctly?

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:08 PM

"kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ apt-cache search gnome keyring
lbdb - The little brother's database for the mutt mail reader
cgmail - A new shiny mail checker for the Gnome desktop
gnome-gpg - GPG passphrase agent based on GNOME Keyring
libgnome-keyring1.0-cil - CLI library to access the GNOME Keyring daemon
monodoc-gnome-keyring-manual - CLI library to access the GNOME Keyring daemon - manual
gnome-keyring - GNOME keyring services (daemon and tools)
libgnome-keyring-dev - Development files for GNOME keyring service
libgnome-keyring0 - GNOME keyring services library
libpam-gnome-keyring - PAM module to unlock the GNOME keyring upon login
network-manager-gnome - network management framework (GNOME frontend)
vinagre - VNC client for the GNOME Desktop"

and this is what i triedto enter after:

kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ sudo apt-get install gnome-keyring
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
gnome-keyring is already the newest version.
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
linux-headers-2.6.24-23-generic linux-headers-2.6.24-23
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

jamescondron 06-11-2009 11:11 PM

Guess its installed then, in which case I have no clue why you aren't able to save your WPA key. Are you using NetworkManager? This is the default network tool.

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:11 PM

well ok is it ok to start with home would that be the root? and yes the filename is correct including the folder containing the folder

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:13 PM

Hmmm no I dont think It Is not I will see If I can set that as default

billymayday 06-11-2009 11:18 PM

What does

ls /home/kurt/backup/EmpireearthIII

show?

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:42 PM

sorry billymayday didnt see your post

kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ ls /home/kurt/backup/EmpireearthIII
ls: cannot access /home/kurt/backup/EmpireearthIII: No such file or directory

jamescondron 06-11-2009 11:45 PM

Do
Code:

ls /home/kurt/backup
then, lets see where this directory is

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:51 PM

bloody hell james that makes things a hell of a lot easier

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:54 PM

this is what i got so i tried entering empire earth III after that here are the result:

ls: cannot access earth: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access III: No such file or directory
kurt@kurt-bedroom:~$ ls /home/kurt/backup/installers/EmpireearthIII
ls: cannot access /home/kurt/backup/installers/EmpireearthIII: No such file or directory

jamescondron 06-11-2009 11:57 PM

Remember.. Spaces!

To escape a space, you use a backslash. so try:
Code:

ls /home/kurt/backup/installers/Empire\ earth\ III
Backslashes escape everything/anything.

But okay, so change your mount command to the right location, as in 'backup/installers', not 'backup/'

linuxnewb1 06-11-2009 11:59 PM

aha renamed the folder WITHOUT spaces worked fine ... now to try and mount ..........

jamescondron 06-12-2009 12:01 AM

Remember, if you need the spaces, escape the spaces with a backslash, but okay, let us know whether you can mount

Wim Sturkenboom 06-12-2009 12:05 AM

No help, but I feel the need to give linuxnewb1 a thumbs up for not giving up after 25 posts.
