Question Problem adjusting video in RH9

I get an "Out of range" message on my monitor eEverytime I attempt to adjust the display on my system running RH9. When this happen I'm no longer able to access the system unless I do a reinstall. I haven't been able to figure out the command that allows me to boot into terminal mode so can someone help me out with these following two (2) questions:
1. How do I boot into command line or terminal mode and bypass grub or the gui login?

2. How do I adjust the video? Linux recognizes my video card during the install and it sets a default screen width but it's too large. I'd like to set it to something higher than 1280x1024.
Can anyone assist or point me in the right direction?
searching....

Read you monitors manual then you will know its specs before you install. anybody knows if the maximum res your monitor supports is 1024x768 you cant go higher. you must know the horz sync ranges vert sync ranges too.

I have this resolution, 1600x1200 configured the same for my XP and Server 2003 systems connected to this kvm so I don't see why this wouldn't work unless linux can't handle a resolution of that size. Besides it doesn't matter what size I set my monitors at once I save the settings, log out and back in I get the same "out of range" error.

Also can anyone direct me to a link or advise on how to disable the GRUB and login from the shell or command line?

Thanks
