Printing With Firefox & Cups

I couldn't figure out exactly what forum this question should go in, so I settled on this one as I'm still finding my way.

I am using a Thinkpad T23 with Debian Etch and GNOME, and am trying to print to a networked printer from Firefox.

In CUPS's web interface I can print a testpage using "lpd://10.x.xx.xx/lp" as the URI. I can also print a testpage from GNOME's printing admin tool. I can also print fine from Open Office. However, when I try and print from Firefox, I have a problem.

The choice of printers I have from the Firefox File>Print dialog are:

xp_ps_spooldir_HOME_Xprintjobs@:64
xp_pdf_spooldir_HOME_Xprintjobs@:64
PostScript/LaserJet-Series

What and where on earth did Firefox get the first two from? And the last one - the printer is called LaserJet-Series in the CUPS webadmin tool but not PostScript/LaserJet-Series. None of this makes sense and not being able to print from my browser is a major problem, so any help gratefully received.

Cheers,
Jude

I assume you are trying to print to a networked printer (perhaps one hanging off another box or even stand-alone on your network)?

If so, then you need to set up a local printer entry that points to the networked printer. The easiest (and most consistent) way is to use the CUPS administrator website.

Make sure CUPS is running locally, open your favorite browser and browse to http://localhost:631. From there you can walk through setting up a local printer that prints over the network. Then when you go to print from Firefox, hopefully the new printer will show up in the dropdown.

As for the other entries already in your printer dropdown, I've got no clue.

Problem Solved

Looking at the Print command properties in Firefox showed that it was using the lpr command to print. I have lpr on my system but it was not working from the command line.

The solution was to apt-get install cupsys-bsd.

Everything works fine now.
