Printing to a Windows Shared printer
Next question:

Once I got finally got networking going (much thanks to bulliver!) I took my new FC3 notebook into work.

We have a Win2K peer-to-peer setup with a LInksys router serving IP and acting as a gateway.

I need to connect to a shared printer here (share name \\front\hp) and cannot for the life of me seem to connect to the workstation, let alone see the printer share.

I did ensure that Samba was installed, but have no idea where it is/what it is/how to use it.

I have appreciated the help I have received, and the great amount of willingness shown on this board towards us newbs. I haven't experienced this amount of patience and help in any other board for any other product... THANKS GUYS!

I would this link that might give you a hand:
Samba Print help

I read it and it seems sort of straight forward, I don't have time at the moment to explain it all but if you look at the help and can't get it just reply and I will give you a hand if I can.

Okay... the good news is that with a lot of playing I got something to go to the printer...

The bad news is that all I get are pages with "Unsupported Personality: PCL" on them.

I am printing to a LJ1010, which I selected from the print configuration dialog in the GUI printer configuration tool.

Does this mean I am missing the .ppd file? If so, how do I specify it (I downloaded the correct one for the printer). I had just assumed that because the printer was listed in the configuration tool, the drivers would be present (Windows envy?)

Thanks in advance...

Found out how to install a new .ppd into the GUI Printer area. Installed it for the printer.

Our shared printer is a Laserjet 1012. I have found out through Google that there are issues with the default drivers, resulting in a "Unsupported Personality: PCL" error from the printer. I found the driver that is supposed to fix this, installed it without too much hassle, but am still getting this error.

Anyone else out there fought with this printer?

I'm using a gentoo 2004.3 and hp 1010 printer, and I'm having exactly the same problem. The thing is, it was working for the first few days I networked this printer, but then once when I spooled two documents onto the printer, one came out and one gave me he unsupported personality error. And it's been doing that ever since. Any help with this would be truly awesome.

I'm running a HP 1010 from Mandrake 10.10 and getting the same error.

It prints happily from a networked windows machine, but "Unsupported Personality: PCL" is the only thing that comes out from the linux machine.

Odd thing is that it was working the first couple of days after I installed it..

Has anyone solved this?

Have any of you with this problem tried using the KDE printer utility, and using the Raw print driver option. I know I've done this on several printers that I've used in the past, and it has worked well each time. Just a thought. ;)

Raw print driver works much better! thanks.

Hello all... since starting this thread I have tried many things to get the printer to work. FInally, with the help of the forum and a kind gentleman from UBC, I have my printer working. To follow the steps we used, check out the following link:;article=6777

Please note one follow up that I have found. I used the GNOME GUI Printer Preferences to set my newly working printer as default. As soon as I exited, I returned to the Unsupported Personality error. It was quickly fixed with the commands shows in the thread above, and I have not had any difficulties since.

Thanks for those that gave advice!
