Yes thank you, all fine now. Interestingly though, when I added the printer again it appears that cups add one by default, so I ended up with two instances of my printer. Odd. But now it is all sorted, thanks a lot for your help!

Yes, well AFAIU udev discovers USB-attached printers dynamically and that causes the automatic instance. Anyway, glad to have been of help here.

turned out that the saga isn't over yet...sorry.
The printer refuse to print double side - the option is greyed out - and \ bunch of other options are greyed out too.
Now, I've uninstalled the drivers and installed them again to no avail.
I then found out that my printer is in fact a Samsung ML 1665 but the best drivers for it are those for 1660 - apparently there are no drivers for 1660 as I understand.
I looked at a bunch of threads, and finished with this one which looked rather promising https://askubuntu.com/questions/4934...2-sided-option but I can't get any duplexer option anywhere but when I go into system settings -> printer and right click on my printer to view the properties, there is a dropdown box next to "Sides" as per screenshot but the only value available there to select is one-sided.
any idea?!

That is really a different issue and as such, you're best to start a new thread (with descriptive title) really. The available printing options come down to the PPD for the printer. Sometimes it is possible to modify the .ppd file to better reflect the printer's actual capabilities.
