printing problems on ubuntu 16.04

Hi guys, I have a laptop with Linux 16.04 and all of a sudden I started to experience problems with my printer.
Every time I try to print I get a printer configuration error. If I open the printer and have a look at the job attribute I can see that it says cups-missing-filter-warning.
Here is a screeshot, attached.
Does anybody know why this happens? I haven't done anything strange, I reckon the problem started after an update.

The 'cups-missing-filter-warning' significant of course. I assume that you have the Samsung unified Linux driver package installed for this model? Perhaps you need to reinstall it for some reason.
Let's check the printer status reported
Code:
lpstat -t
and the driver (filter) used
Code:
egrep -i "model|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*

Hi ferrari, thanks for your reply. I've run the above commands:
Code:
antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$ lpstat -t
scheduler is running
system default destination: ML-1660-Series
device for ML-1660-Series: usb://Samsung/ML-1660%20Series?serial=Z4ZCBKCZ700421E.
ML-1660-Series accepting requests since Fri 02 Mar 2018 21:59:08 GMT
printer ML-1660-Series disabled since Fri 02 Mar 2018 21:59:08 GMT -
	Backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb does not exist!
ML-1660-Series-29 antobbo 33792 Fri 02 Mar 2018 21:59:08 GMT
antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$ egrep -i "model|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*
grep: /etc/cups/ppd/ML-1660-Series.ppd: Permission denied
antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$ sudo egrep -i "model|filter" /etc/cups/ppd/*
[sudo] password for antobbo:
*ModelName: "Samsung ML-1660"
*cupsModelNumber: 0
*cupsFilter: "application/vnd.cups-raster 0 rastertoqpdl"
*OpenUI *ColorModel/Color Mode: PickOne

*DefaultColorModel: Gray
*ColorModel Gray/Grayscale: "<</cupsColorSpace 3/cupsColorOrder 0/cupsCompression 17>>setpagedevice"
*CloseUI: *ColorModel
antobbo@antobbo-UX305CA:~$
It seems the printer is disabled on this machine - I printed from another ubuntu machine and it works OK.
I believe I had the drivers installed as the printer has always worked OK, but I have no idea what has happened.
So I need to reinstall the drivers right?

Can you use the cups browser interface? url localhost:631 It looks like the printer disables itself each time it is enabled. You can also try printing a test page.

Does /usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl exist? Yes, it may be easiest just to reinstall the Unified Linux Driver.

I missed this in your 'lpstat' output...
Code:
Backend /usr/lib/cups/backend/usb does not exist!
The CUPS usb backend is part of CUPS, so you'll need to (re)install the 'cups' package.

OK great, thanks, I will try to reinstall cups and see how it goes, not quite sure why things have gone wrong in the first place though. I will post back here

No, it does seem strange to me as well. I note a quick google of '/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb ubuntu' (and similar) throws up a number of similar threads. In particular, this Debian thread caught my attention...

Quote:
The installer failed with "Backend
/usr/lib/cups/backend/usb does not exist!". ldadmin gave 'Bad device-uri
scheme "usb"'.

The solution was easy, if I had known what to do: copy
/usr/lib/cups/backend-available/usb to /usr/lib/cups/backend/. Doi!

Maybe this will help someone in the future.
So check if /usr/lib/cups/backend-available/usb exists, and copy it to the required location if necessary.

Right, I've reinstalled the drivers and everything, no joy. Now in cups the error I get is this:
Code:
Paused - "File "/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl" not available: No such file or directory"
so, nothing to do - it seems - with the usb file (I checked that too but I can see a USB file already in /usr/lib/cups/backend/ ).
Any other idea?

Well as a simple diagnostic step, check for yourself that the file is absent or not with...
Code:
ls -l /usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoqpdl
BTW, this filter is associated with the foo2qpdl driver, but I'm not sure where you got that from, (and I'm not an Ubuntu user). Was it supplied as one of the CUPS packages, or did you install it manually somehow?

Using the Samsung Unified Linux Driver may be a better bet here...

HP acquired the Samsung printer business and now provide the support for Samsung printers...

I tried, that file doesn't exist. SO, I uninstalled cups, reinstalled it again and installed the drivers yet again, this time from the link you provided - the last one. Alas, no joy, the printer still says that the rastertoqpdl doesn't exist anywhere - same msg as above on cups. mmm, not sure what else to try, and no, I have no idea where I got that file from, I've never copied it from anywhere it must have come with something else.

That is as expected. Delete the existing printer configuration and start over. You need to select the Samsung driver this time.

Right, OK sorted finally, and yes I had to delete it from Cups and reinstall it again. I'll run through the process here again, just for the benefit of other people who are in the same situation.
-Uninstall the drivers of your printer
-Reinstall the drivers
-Remove the printer from cups and add it again.
If it still doesn't work then uninstall cups, reinstall it again and follow again the above steps.

Yes, from CUPS. This can be done via a printer utility, the CUPS webinterface, or from a terminal using lpadmin
Code:
sudo lpadmin -x <printer-name>
So, in your case
Code:
sudo lpadmin -x ML-1660-Series
