Printing in Linux
 

I'm trying to get my Epson Stylus Photo R300 working on my computer.
I've installed a number of printing packages from aptitude such as cupsys, gimp-print, foomatic, etc etc. However, I'm having a bit of trouble with the setup. I ran gnome-cups-manager which has a pretty nice setup wizard. However, it's not detecting any local printers. In addition, my printer is hooked up via USB hub so specifying a port doesn't work well either. Any suggestions?

I needed the drivers from my printer's manufacturers site as well.

You can configure a part of CUPS via your webbrowser. Though it's not really the recommended way I think. Just type in this address:
http://localhost:631

well see i've done a lot of work with my printer since i posted that this morning and i've run into some new problems not really realizing if i've made any progress whatsoever.

so now all sorts of interesting things happen. i've begun to try hooking up my old stylus 777i just to make sure it wasn't something wrong with my r300 but the 777 won't work either. i think its a configuration issue rather than a driver issue which is why i've been hesitant about upgrading my gimp-print. i'm running 4.2.7 gimp-print btw.

so anyway things happen such as the connections prompt in gnome-cups-manager always has my 777 as parallel port...even when i change it. as soon as i open the box again it goes right back to parallel port which clearly isn't the case. in addition the driver source for my r300 is listed as /dev/usb/lp1 which doesn't exist. so i'm a bit confused as to how to handle some of these problems. any suggestions?

I'll suggest upgrading to the latest gimp-print driver or at least 4.3.25 as the link above suggests. I'll also suggest using the cups web interface as in post #3. Hope this helps.

I had a problem setting up an Epson USB printer using CUPS - It turns out that whatever version of cups I had had a problem with detecting USB printers.

Try pluging in and switching on your printer, and then restart the CUPS daemon. The easiest way to do this may be to reboot your computer... Then try setting it up again.
*edit: This worked for me, but it may not help you

Also, use the web-browser interface for setting up CUPS, http://localhost:631
