Most HP printers work on Linux using the hplip package for their drivers. Do you have this installed?

Having said this, I suspect you've bought a pup. Here is a report on the Open Printing site for an HP Envy 5000. It doesn't bode well for the 5052.

What Hazel said.

HPLIP is in the Mint repos. Note that command-line program and the GUI program (hp-toolbox) are usually two separate packages.

Not in the HPLIP supported printers list either...

If the user has a windows machine on a LAN, it may be viable to set up a shared directory with samba access and consider using something like AutoPrint (or similar automated printing utility) on the windows server to automatically print files sent to this directory. That would alleviate the need for a Linux driver and printer configuration. Just a thought.
