Printer problems Canon IP4500 and Ubuntu 109
Hi there. I'm new to Linux. My son installed it. First, I was pleased. Then I was angry: we have three printers in the house. It was incompatible with them all (when I connected the printer, it did not automatically install it. Now I'm frustrated. I have been to sites to find out what version of Linux I have. I am not a techie. I worked out how to get into the black terminal screen. I worked out how to write the command uname -a and got the answer Ubuntu 109. I don't know what this means but I then worked out how to put a command in $ sudo apt-get install cnijfilter-ip4500series to install the printer. It asked me for my password. I entered the password I use to open the user interface when I turn on the laptop. No dice. I need to distribute posters this pm. I will have to spend more money, going into town to get them from there. Not great. Any help appreciated. Advice, guidance, kind words of encouragement....

Hey,
What happens when you fill in your password? It might be that you'd have to add your account to the administrators: http://askubuntu.com/questions/70236...e-command-line Afterwards you can do a lot more, including installing programs/packages using sudo apt-get :). Good luck! |
Oh, it liked it this time. It said 'building dependency tree
Reading state information ... Done then it said Unable to locate package cnijfilter-ip4500series Wondering what to do now... |
Seems like there are no canon printer drivers in the RPM's searched by your apt(if I'm not mistaken).
so you'll need to add one manually: http://ubuntuportal.com/2011/12/how-...ux-ubuntu.html |
What is it...
What is the system(hardware) you're running? What version of Ubuntu are you running, and is it 32-bit or 64-bit? "109" makes no sense. Open a terminal again and try the command "cat /etc/*-release" and post back. The drivers for the ip4500 from Canon are for 32-bit linux installations unless you convert them, a task probably too hard for you at this stage, so if you want Ubuntu you should be running something like Ubuntu 14.10 32-bit or perhaps Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS 32-bit. Assuming that you're using drivers from Canon, notice that there are guides for installation in the driver downloads. They are helpful. |
Attempting to respond to communication I barely understand
You have to understand that I do not speak your language. I am using an HP laptop. Why does that make any difference?
153rd, I appreciate the link but I don't know what to do about it. I type in the info (why Michael Gruz? Do I put my name instead? Tried both. 'Cannot access PPA. Check internet connection.' I think this is a waste of time. thorkelljarl I don't understand your question. I don't know what version of Ubuntu I'm using. I followed instructions as per description in initial post. Got the command line from an internet post. I don't know if it's 32 or 64 bit. I don't know how to find out. I did not install Linux. Someone else did. Then left. I don't know what the driver download installation guides are because I can't install anything. |
Not so hard...
You open a terminal. You wrote you can do that. You type the command I gave you exactly as within the quotes. The reply should tell you which version of linux you're using. The Canon drivers are for 32-bit versions of linux. See the first paragraph here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/32-bit A 64-bit(hardware) laptop can be installed with 32-bit linux. If you download the Canon driver, you'll get compressed files you can click on. There'll be a guide. If you're using Ubuntu, you need the .deb version. http://www.canon-europe.com/support/...ma_ip4500.aspx |
