Printer problems

My printer is having problems. I connected it, I turned it on and it started printing lines and lines of alphanumeric characters.

Is there a way to stop this and still be able to print?

CUPS is installed but only after receiving advice to install it. CUPS has done nothing to stop it, I've tried cancel and lprm and they don't work.

It always comes up with 'Unable to connect to server!'

Thanks.

kill the printing proces (probably lpr or cups)
go to tops (system monitor) to see which process it is.

That happened to me as well, and I'm afraid I couldn't find out which process kept the printer going so I just deleted the printer entirely and reinstalled it.
But perhaps someone else has a better idea on why it keeps printing?

You can go to http://localhost:631 and if you have admin privileges you can go to admin and delete the print jobs. The problem I have here is that even if I delete rpint jobs from CUPS, the printer doesn't stop. I have to turn of computer, and turn it on again.
