printer help needed
 

Hi, very new of LINUX but liking it very much.
I bought an Acer Aspire with Limpus Linux operating system and love it. I have brought the Acer with me to Senegal where I use it for both my both work and entertainment. However, I also brought my Canon PIXMA i90 printer-granted somewhat naively- without checking on its compatibility with Linux and so far have had no luck getting it to run on the Acer.

Can anyone help by pointing me in the right directions for software / installation instructions for this printer's driver that's compatible with Linux?

Many questions concerning printer compatability in linux can be answered by looking at linuxprinting.org. I know this is not now helpful to you now, but in case someone, in future, looks here before buying the printer, I wanted add this.

I have in the past said to senior people from Canon that they should either open up there printer interfaces or release their own open source drivers. You can see how much good this has done (clue: not much, possibly even less). I don't think they understand that this is not only costing them printer sales but also camera sales. Ho, hum.

Even if they do release drivers for Linux and UNIX, they do not necessarily have to be open source. While that would be the preference, the first steps to convincing a company to produce alternative-OS-friendly drivers is to just ease them in the door and let them find out the probable gains for themselves.

I have never seen the harm in distributing details about the printer interfaces, though. Heh, whenever I go to set up a printer and I hit a few snags, my dad goes into this nostalgic trance about "You know, Nick...back in college, I wrote my own printer driver in QBASIC..."
