im trying to configure an epson stylus color 980 in debian

apt-get install foomatic-db* foomatic-filters* cupsys
# and optionally:
apt-get install kdeprint
Then either configure using your browser:
http://localhost:631
or the Kde control center, if appropriate. According to the linuxprinting.org entry, it should work pretty well under Linux.
