printconf > Cannot get drivers to be recognized
 

I have been TRYing to get my HP deskjet 3420 printer to work on my linux box for weeks now but after following the HP instructions located here:

at least 4-5 times I have gotten absolutely nowhere and am completely flummoxed. I have verified all of the steps they ask me to and it all passes but when I try this: (it just won't print - even though HP says it should)

This is the "HP usage example":

I have installed the hpijs driver and done the command hpijs -h and it passses

The ghost script thing also works.

When I try to use the RedHat printer Config to choose the driver, NONE of the "new drivers" that I just installed turn up. I know this is my problem but I just can't connect how to get printconf to recognize the drivers installed. I was reading an article in Linux Format and I got the impression that after I installed a driver I need to recompile the kernel. Is this the case? If so, I'm screwed!

Please help me, otherwise I'm going to have to print on a dinosaur of a printer (which should be extinct).

I've tried everything I could think of to make this work and it's still a no go. I'm using redhat 8.0. Do we need to relocate the drivers to another directory, because they are not being picked up for me either.

Any luck with your issue?

Yeah I got it to work,
HP's drivers for the 3420 are included in RH 9.0.
All I did was just install RH9.0.
BUT BE WEARY!!!
I have four USB slots on my box it took me 4 hours that I had to connect it to /dev/usb/lp0. I spent 2 hours trying to get it to work on /dev/lp0
Your lpX might differ depending on which USB you have the printer plugged into.
Using either CUPs or the redhat-config-printer it should then work but I can't figure out how to improve the quality of the printing(its equivalent to draft on Windoze). If you figure out how to improve the quality can you get back to me.

Anyway give /dev/usb/lpX a go then I'd recommend getting RH9.0 over RH8.0(save yourself the trouble of this configuration) if you can't get it to work.

I just gave up and returned the printer. I had issues installing it on windows as well and I did'nt have the time to spend trouble shooting. I reverted to an old Deskjet 340 that I had lying around and that should suffice.

Did you upgrade to Redhat 9 or a brand new installation?

Well actually I put RH on a different box with full installation though if you select all the printer options in an upgrade it should work...I used to pick and choose what I put on my box but nowadays I couldn't give a damn so I just select full install and hope that everything is supported(and it usually is!.:D )
