Primary and Extended Partitions

Hi,
I've just bought myself a nice new Hard Drive for my Linux machine and i've been doing some research on the Internet into fdisk before i jump in and partition it up.

According to some sites i've seen they say you can only have up to 4 primary partitions on a Drive. Is this correct. I was hoping to have more.

They were also talking about extended partitions. What are these and how do they differ to Primary Partitions.

Is there a limit on the Number of these I can create.

These are things I probably should know. Sorry if I'm asking really stupid questions.

Thanks in advance for your help

Flossie

Originally, the limit was 4. Now it is ~40 or ~60. Extended partitions allow the extra partitions. They are special primary partitions that carry several logical ones.

If you want, say, 5 partitions on one disk, I would make one primary and one extended, but make the extended partition take up the amount of space you want for 4 partitions if you get my drift. Then create 4 logical partitions in the extended partition so you have 5 in total. Get it?
