Sorry for the vague title, but I don't even know where to start to describe this. I was doing some tinkering on my Kubuntu 5.10 box this morning and wanted to make it speed up, so I found this HOWTO on how to optimize Kubuntu.
So, I go to do the step that says "prelink" and things seem to go fine, but then I run this step:
sudo prelink -avmR
And things SEEM to run fine, then all of a sudden I lose the connection to the box (I'm vnc-ing and ssh-ing into it at the time). I figure.... prelink must have just shut these services down... they'll come back in a minute. Nope... didn't come back. So I go downstairs to the computer and it's sitting there with a blank screen, but still powered on. I can't make it come back to life. So, I give'er the ol' hard boot to the head. It gets to GRUB and I choose my normal option, then it basically chokes from there. I get the message "Unable to load shared libraries" something about "libncurses.so.5" and something about an invalid ELF header. I tried booting into the box in Recovery mode and the best I can get is a non-graphical login prompt, and when I type in a user name and press enter and get some weird messages, and then back to the login prompt. I can't got a clue what to do here. Is there some way I can "rescue" my Kubuntu system. I'd really rather not have to re-do the whoel thing.
Live-cd or single user mode, reinstall every component your system reports error with. Should help. Or remove the prelink. BTW, if you use the live cd, chroot. If you don't know how to do that, email me , I've seen enough of such threads on LQ. They never put them sticky.
I can't get anywhere to try to re-install components. I even try running the Live CD to see if I can look at files on the harddisk and all sorts of strange things are happening. Sometimes initializing the network works, sometimes it fails, sometimes detecting the keyboard works, sometimes it fails... it seems 3 different things are going on here. I just tried to at least *start* the reinstall process and I'm getting some error like:
Relax, it's not. Just do this: get SLAX, copy all your files to your mail (if you need loads of space , email me . I invite to gmail.) and do a reistall. That is the easy way.
BinJajer... you da man!!!(or woman... can't assume)...
It turns out whatever I was doing to the computer when I was trying to sort things out (lots of repeated resets... etc. etc.) was overheating things. My case was SERiously burning up for a while there. So I let it cool and decided to just to try again, and ended up doing a fresh install, losing all my stuff from before. Annoying as hell, but I wanted to get my /home directory on a different partition from the system ANYway, and I wouldn't have known hwo to do that smoothly, so a fresh install, although annoying, will help in a small way.
THanks for your time.
Stu
Btw, my external hardrive burned out today too... I almost said "TO HELL WITH COMPUTERS" and moved into the bush to wear a loin cloth and live off the land. I'm over that idea now
