pppd exit code 16
I get this when I use wvdial to connect to dial up internet.
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately. --> Starting pppd at Fri Jul 11 00:01:51 2003 --> pid of pppd: 10126 --> Disconnecting at Fri Jul 11 00:01:57 2003 --> The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code = 16) Please help me Thanks |
Anyone?

do you have an '/etc/ppp/pap-secrets' file? I found that pppd would die unexpectedly (code 16 in fact) if that file is not present when running kppp; if you are not using pppd proper, that file can be blank, but it must be present (and only root-readable). Do 'touch /etc/ppp/pap-secrets; chmod 600 /etc/ppp/pap-secrets' and see if that solves it. If you still have problems, try filling the file with correct contents; man pppd for more info.

Yes, I have that file. The problem mysteriously disappeared when I unplugged the ethernet wire.
Thanks anyway |
Now I'm curious... how did unplugging the ethernet wire solve the pppd problem?

I have no clue..maybe the ethernet settings (I have high speed internet too) were interfering with thedialup internet (/etc/resolv.conf)?? just maybe??

Why on earth would you torture yourself with dial up if you've got high-speed? I understand when away, but why when it's right there???
Cool |
Actually I am moving to a different city and I wont have highspeed over there (atleast for a couple of months), so I wanted to configure it before that. Also, I wanted to learn how it works.

Ah, I see ;) Nice fore-thought.
I hope you don't go too crazy without high speed, I know I am going to when I move here shortly. :D Cool |
