pp printer will not work in SUse 9.1

Hello everybody,

I have a problem with my parallel port printer (HP LaserJet 5P) under a Suse 9.1 System. I canīt configure it nor install it, because every time I try to do it in YAST, there will be a message, that says, that the parallel port isnīt configured. Whatīs going wrong? How can I change something to make it work? Can anybody pleas help me?
I have already tried to change the IRQ in BIOS, but this wouldnīt help. :(

here is some info concerning linux in general w/your printer.

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...HP-LaserJet_5P

this next link suggests there may be an issue w/yast and printers of this type in general, however, this was written for suse 7.0, i might assume that this problem has been corrected if not for your post.

http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2000/0...t-70-pcl5.html

finally some info from suse on setting up a printer,

hope something here gets you going.
good luck.

I am absolute helpless... Please, can anybody help me????????

I'm in the SAME boat!

I'm in the SAME boat, on the SAME SuSE 9.1 distribution, so if anyone knows the answer, please let me know. Thanks!

I gave up and reinstalled the OS completly and...voilā....everything works fine. I noticed, that all other installations with older Suse versions run well when I didnīt configured the printer while installattion only after the installation. Maybe this was the false? I really dontīt know, but than it runs well? :newbie:

no good for me, I did the same, (reinstall from scratch), and it still won't recognize my printer or CD player. Thinking of going back to "Lindows" (note, I did not say Windows)

So, what kind of printer are you using? Is it also a parallelport like mine or an usb printer?
Wow, you have allready used Lindows? What do you think about it? I have heard something about it, but dont know anybody who uses it....I'm very snoopy...:)

skydart 08-28-2004 10:38 AM

Lindows is excellent. "Works right out of the box", with miniscule configuration required. Why am I using SuSE? . . . because it uses KDE 3.2, whereas LIndows uses KDE 3.1.

BTW, the installation of apps from Lindows is the way that Micro$oft *should* have done it all the while since XP. Incredible. When Lindows 5 is released, I'm sure I will switch back. I might do that now, as my printers and sound work and now wtih SuSE, I can't get my Brother HL-1240 printer to work (printer parallel port) or CD player to play music. In Lindows, BOOM, it already works. If I keep on talking, I just might convince myself to go back to Lindows now!

But I think it is not as cheap as Suse, or not?
Most of the time I only could get some information in US sites but none in Europe, it's a pitty.
The concept for installation is very interesting, because I think, that this is something that would be for the future, not so slow like Yast is. So, if I have to pay 99$, it may be more or less 99Ī and that's very much. Ok, these dayes XP Professional also costs 136Ī in Europe, and you wouldn't get some apps with it.
How much application are integrated in Lindows to justify the price, and is it possible to get it for another language than English?

Pricey? no. You can easily do a search for Lindows 4.5, and download it. Install it, and then you have a two week trial to all of their software, (over 1900 apps!). Then, for only $4.95 USD a month, (afer your trial), you get to still use the apps you installed via CRN (their term for their software warehouse app), and you get to continue to install the non commercial apps. OR, you can save $10 USD and pay $50. USD up front for a one year memebership. For me, I'll pay the $4.95 a month.

PS. Lindows registration? They say that they think that is a joke, something that OTHER operating systems use. ;-)
