Power Macs and Linux
I'm sorry if this happens to be in the wrong forum, but I figured I'd start here because I am TOTALLY new to Linux. I've recently been given 4 Power Macs and I'm not sure if any of them can run Linux. I have a Power 6500/225, 9500/180MP, 5200/75LC, and a Mac Performa 6300CD. Could somebody please point me in the right direction as to how to get Linux on any of these, if it's even possible? Thanks in advance!

Well, since Mac OS-X is based on Unix and Linux is designed to be compatible with Unix, I'd say give it a go and see what happens. There's no other sure-fire way to know if it will work.

I am looking for a distro that will work. Right now, I'm really considering just getting rid of all the Power Macs except the 9500/180MP. That one seems to have the most potential in terms of using it as a Linux box. It seems like all the other ones are pretty crappy builds, especially the 5200/75LC. I did find a site that had info on installing linux on a 9500/180MP, which is what I think I'm gonna do. So any info on a distro that'll work would be helpful thanks!

Many of the most common distro's have a ppc version. Which distro is your favorite? That would be a good start.

I used the ppc version of debian for a few years on my dirt old imac to run a webserver

pretty much any distro that offers a ppc version will work.
try a few! (hint, when donwloading most distros will have x86, ppc and x64(x86_64) avalable just choose ppc and go) i alos bellive that yellowdog linux is designed for the ppc architecture |
