Postfix question
 

I installed Postfix on my suse 9.2 system with the intent of setting up my own mail server .

when i send mails from it onto the local domain email accounts the emails are delivered just fine.

however the problem starts when i try and send mails to address like hotmail , yahoo etc.

when i send the emails the emails go just fine. to check that i checked the postfix log in

it says that the destination address has been resolved , the message has been sent and that it has been deleted from the queue.

However the email never reaches the desitination !:scratch: i tried with many address and none of them seems to be receiving the emails.

i am using my service providers smtp server as a realy server.

any help would be appreciated.

I am just making an educated guess here but your ISP's mail server may not accept any relays due to spam issues. ISP mailservers are private property and probably don't allow open relays...they are for ISP's users only.

But I may be completely wrong.

thanks for the reply .....

but i am already paying for their services => shouldn't they let me use their smtp server for mail sending... ?

also is their a way in postfix to enter the username and password details for the relay server .. so that my isp's smtp server can authenticate me n then let me relay mails ....??

does your isp requrie you to use them as your smtp server? if they're your smtp server and messages arent being relayed then theres a chance the problem is on their end. their server has to be the one to require authentication. you can't configure your postfix server to require your isp to authenticate.

I am no postfix expert...infact I've never installed postfix. You will have to dig google to get postfix tutorials. ISP's are pretty strict about mail usage due to spam concerns even if you pay. Check out your ISP's internet usage policy and you would know.

Have you checked their spam boxes? The servers may detect it as spam coming from your machine.
