Testing different distros is a great idea if you are looking to learn more about managing your system and get down and dirty. Slackware, Arch, Gentoo, Linux From Scratch, and FreeBSD will force you to get under the hood from day one which is fine if you are or want to be a good system administrador. However I would not recomment use your family computer for testing distros because most the time the first installation of these distros are a throwaway installations and you end up re installing.

Evangelists of other distros will always says their distro is better so be prepared for that. Keep in mind too grass looks always greener on the other side.

And to answer your question is No, the other distros arent going to give you anything that you dont have already
